My Eee PC netbook has a virus and I don't care about any of my documents on it, so I'd like to restore it to factory settings. Its an Asus Eee PC and it runs Windows XP. First plug out from any power source and Power Off your Asus tablet. Next, press and hold the Volume Down key and the Power Button at the same time. Wait a couple of seconds until the recovery menu will appear. In this menu, select Factory Reset by pressing the Volume Down key and start the process with the Volume Up key.
A side note: as soon as you do this, you will lose all of your data that you currently have on your system. Including any tweaks and software updates you might have done to your EEE. Be prepared to re-tweak and re-update everything. This process takes a little more time, but is not difficult either.
- Press Control+Alt+T to open up a terminal window
- Type su (and enter your password)
- Type apt-get update to make sure the package list is up to date.
- Type apt-get upgrade to upgrade all of the EEE's packages to the latest versions.
(say yes to any prompts it asks)
As I mentioned before, this process takes a little longer, but overall, it's faster than using the software updater in Basic Mode.
